India Thrash Sri Lanka 8–0 as SAFF U-19 Championship Kicks Off in Arunachal Pradesh

The SAFF U-19 Men’s Football Championship 2025 began with a resounding start in Yupia, Arunachal Pradesh, as India overpowered Sri Lanka with a commanding 8–0 victory in their opening Group B match at the Golden Jubilee Stadium.

Striker Daniel Meitei led India’s charge with a stunning hat-trick, while Prashan Jajo added two goals. Captain Shami Singamayum and local talent Omang Dudum also found the net, showcasing India’s depth and attacking strength. Under the guidance of coach Bibiano Fernandes, India surged to a 4–0 lead by halftime and maintained their relentless tempo in the second half, scoring four more to seal a dominant win.

The match also witnessed the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, Sports Minister Kento Jini, and other dignitaries, marking a grand inauguration of the tournament.

Despite the heavy defeat, the Sri Lankan side earned admiration for their spirit and sportsmanship, never backing down in the face of India’s onslaught.

India, placed in Group B alongside Sri Lanka and Nepal, will next face Nepal on May 13. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.

Earlier on the opening day, defending champions Bangladesh were held to a 2–2 draw by the Maldives in an intense Group A encounter. The championship, which runs from May 9 to 18, features six South Asian nations: India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and the Maldives.

Bangladesh vs Bhutan – 4:00 PM IST
Sri Lanka vs Nepal – 7:30 PM IST

All matches are being held at the Golden Jubilee Stadium in Yupia.
