Some pro-Khalistan elements allegedly called and verbally abused Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s daughter Seerat Kaur Mann, who lives in the US, a Patiala-based lawyer has claimed.

Seerat, her brother Dilshan and their mother Inderpreet Kaur Grewal, who separated from Mann in 2015, live in Seattle, US. In a Facebook post, Advocate Harmeet Brar asked “if threatening and abusing children will get you Khalistan?”

The post said Mann’s daughter received abusive calls from pro-Khalistan elements and that such groups were planning to gherao and harass the chief minister’s children in the US.

“Are you going to get Khalistan this way by threatening and abusing children… Such people are a blot on Sikhism,” wrote Brar.

Sharing the post further, Inderpreet confirmed the incident and wrote: “Thanks, I really appreciate.”

Speaking to The Indian Express, Brar said: “I spoke to Inderpreet over phone and she told me that Seerat received threat calls from pro-Khalistan elements. They abused her using extremely derogatory words. Some resolution has also been passed in a gurdwara in the US asking pro-Khalistan supporters to gherao both children over the situation in Punjab. Who has given such elements the right to harass Mann’s children? What do they have to do with what’s happening here?”

Confirming the incident, Seerat Mann in a post on her social media account, wrote: “For the past several days my brother and I have been receiving threats online, through the phone, and even during meetings that are held in the gurudwara here regarding the situation in punjab right now. I’d like to reiterate that we are NOT at all involved with the decision- making of any politician in india, particularly the CM of punjab, so I really don’t understand why we are being targeted. We have been very concerned about our safety the past week and therefore would appreciate that if you hear or see anything about us, you can understand this and can explain the same to someone if needed.”

The Indian Express has contacted Inderpreet for comments. Her reply was awaited.

Mann’s children had attended his swearing in ceremony as chief minister last year.

Mann and Inderpreet had started living separately in 2015 and later got divorced. He married Dr Gurpreet Kaur Mann last year.
