The decision to curtail AFSPA in certain areas of Assam, Manipur & Nagaland comes in the wake of a significant improvement in the law and order situation, especially in the later two states
There is jubilation in the Northeast following the Centre’s landmark decision with chief ministers of Assam, Nagaland and Manipur hailing the move made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Announcing the move earlier in the afternoon, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that in a significant step, the Government of India under the decisive leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to reduce the disturbed areas under Armed Forces Special Powers Act in the states of Nagaland, Assam and Manipur after decades. Shah said that the reduction in disturbed areas under AFSPA is a result of the improved security situation and fast-tracked development due to the consistent efforts and several agreements to bring lasting peace in the Northeast by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The reduction in the areas under AFSPA came at a time when there has been demand for several quarters for complete withdrawal of the act from across the region after the Oting firing incident.
