Amid the illegal coal mining row, Meghalaya home minister Lahkmen Rymbui today made a significant statement that is certain to raise eyebrows.
Defending the state police, Rymbui said that the strength of the force has to be increased to effectively deal with all kinds of illegal activities, including coal mining.

While maintaining that the government is making its best efforts to contain incidents of illegality, Lahkmen Rymbui pointed out that the government is facing constraints in terms of policing.
Rymbui said that there is a shortage of around 1800 police personnel for which posts have been lying vacant.
