The protestors caught the director off guard with their surprise gherao, compelling him to step out of his office and address their concerns directly.

In a dramatic escalation of tensions, members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Friday stormed into the office of NEIGRIHMS Director Prof. Nalin Mehta, demanding answers over alleged violations of reservation policies and a lack of transparency in the ongoing recruitment process.

The protestors caught the director off guard with their surprise gherao, compelling him to step out of his office and address their concerns directly. Speaking to the media, HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem expressed serious concerns over the absence of any clear mention of the female-to-male recruitment ratio and the implementation of Scheduled Tribe (ST) reservations. Prof. Mehta met with the delegation and handed over a written response addressing their demands.

Synrem said that the organisation’s primary demand is the implementation of an 80:20 female-to-male recruitment ratio. The director informed them that NEIGRIHMS would once again write to the Union Health Ministry, seeking approval to implement this policy. However, he clarified that amending the Recruitment Rules requires clearance from the Centre.

The HYC President also raised the issue of ST reservations, stating that the organisation has demanded NEIGRIHMS implement the 44% reservation for Scheduled Tribes as per the Office Memorandum issued by the Ministry of Personnel. He acknowledged that NEIGRIHMS has taken some steps in this regard.

“We submitted a letter on March 24, giving them an ultimatum of seven working days to respond. However, until today, we have not received any reply. This is why we had to come to the office and lock the director’s office,” Synrem said.

Following the protest, the director finally provided a response and assured that the examination centre for recruitment will be located within the state. However, the organisation made it clear that the recruitment process cannot proceed unless their demand for implementing the gender ratio is fulfilled.
