Rescuers found Lee and Kwoon in the tail section of the aircraft, the only part that remained intact amid the flames.

It was nothing less than a miracle for the two crew members of the ill-fated Jeju Air Flight 2216 who survived the plane crash at Muan International Airport on December 29, that killed 179 of the 181 passengers and crew on board.

The two crew members, identified as Lee and Kwoon, were the only ones who came out alive from the crash, said to be one of the worst plane crashes in South Korea in decades.

How 2 Crew Member Survive
Rescuers found Lee and Kwoon in the tail section of the aircraft, the only part that remained intact amid the flames. The survivors were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to safety, but hope faded for the others as hours passed.

“By late December 29, we confirmed the heartbreaking news 179 people had lost their lives,” a spokesperson for South Korea’s National Fire Agency said.

The victims included at least 84 women and 82 men. The genders of 11 other victims could not be immediately identified.

How Did the Plane Crash?

The ill-fated passenger plane was landing at Muan International Airport when it skidded off the runway at high speed, slamming into a wall before erupting into flames. The crash sent thick black smoke billowing into the sky, leaving relatives anxiously waiting for news at the airport.

Jeju Air, a popular low-cost carrier, is now at the center of investigations to determine the cause of the crash. The tragic accident has left South Korea in mourning and the global aviation community shocked.

The crash is the deadliest worldwide since the 2018 Lion Air Flight 610 disaster, in which 189 people perished when the plane plunged into the Java Sea.

As investigators comb through the wreckage at Muan International Airport, families of the victims await answers, grappling with the profound loss caused by one of the deadliest air disasters in recent memory.
