Chief Minister PS Tamang will also have to resign from either the Soreng or the Rhenock seat as he had won from both the seats but as per election norms

Within 24 hours of taking oath as a member of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, Krishna Kumari Rai, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) legislator from Namchi Singithang constituency and wife of Chief Minister PS Tamang, has resigned from her MLA position today.

Chief Minister PS Tamang has released a statement and said that his wife has vacated her seat in line with the unanimous decision of the party, prioritizing its welfare and objectives.

He added that his wife at the request of the parliamentary committee of the SKM party, had contested the elections for the welfare of the party.

Tamang added that the Party Committee is committed to providing opportunities to genuine and dedicated party functionaries and assure the residents of Namchi-Singithang Constituency that the people will continue to have a dedicated and genuine MLA who will serve their interests, while his wife Krishna Rai and he himself remain deeply involved in addressing the people’s needs.

Krishna Rai had taken oath on June 12 along with the other MLAs.

CM Tamang will also have to resign from either the Soreng or the Rhenock seat in the coming days. This means Sikkim will see by-polls in two seats, the Namchi Singithang seat and either of the Soreng or Rhenock seat, whichever the Chief Minister vacates.

Certain political observers of the state are saying that Krishna Rai resigned to steer clear of any allegations on the lines of dynastic or family politics because speculations are rife that Tamang’s son Aditya might contest from the Soreng seat after his father vacates it.

Aditya had won the seat once.
