At a time when the Conrad Sangma-led government is trying all means to restore complete normalcy in Shillong, an organization named ‘Sur Ki Nong Mawlai’ or the ‘Voice of the People of Mawlai’ has served the Conrad Sangma-led government a 7-day ultimatum demanding suspension of East Jaintia Hills SP and Shillong City SP for their alleged role in the encounter of former HNLC general secretary Cheristerfield Thangkiew.

Activist Samran Syiem termed the meeting with Conrad Sangma a big disappointment, as the state government refused to agree to their demand. He further alleged that the encounter depicted the failure of government and the state police.

Reacting to their demand, Sangma maintained that no action can be taken against the cops until the judicial inquiry report is out. He reiterated that the government has decided to constitute and independent inquiry as to assure their will be no interference from any quarter into the probe.

Sangma further informed that the chairperson on the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission will head the judicial inquiry set up to investigate the killing of the ex-HNLC leader.

The Meghalaya Cabinet had on Monday decided to initiate a judicial inquiry into the ‘killing’ of Thangkhiew.

Meanwhile, after returning to normalcy, curfew in Shillong agglomeration has been relaxed from 5 am to 4 pm on August 18. However, public gatherings, public meetings and rallies have been prohibited.
