The announcement came on April 19, following a two-day visit by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma to the region.

In a historic decision aimed at preserving indigenous identity and promoting linguistic inclusivity, the Government of Assam has officially declared Karbi as an administrative language in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts, alongside English. The announcement came on April 19, following a two-day visit by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma to the region.

Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang, expressed deep gratitude to the state government and the Chief Minister for what he described as a “forward-thinking and culturally empowering” decision.

Community organisations, cultural leaders, and educators across the districts welcomed the announcement with enthusiasm. They hailed it as a long-awaited recognition of the linguistic rights of the Karbi people and a crucial step in safeguarding the region’s heritage.

“This move reaffirms our cultural identity and inspires our youth to take pride in their roots,” said one local educator, adding that the official status of the language would strengthen cultural consciousness and educational development in the region.

The government plans to implement the use of Karbi in official communication, administrative work, and education through a phased rollout. Training programs for government employees and the development of language resources are already underway to facilitate the transition.

The decision comes in response to growing demands from indigenous communities for greater acknowledgment and protection of their languages, which are seen as an important components of Assam’s rich socio-cultural mosaic.

With Karbi now enjoying official status, residents of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong look forward to a future where their language holds rightful space in the administrative and educational framework of the region.
