Heavy floods and landslides wreak havoc in Nagaland; CM Neiphiu Rio seeks Centre’s help

Incessant rainfall leading to heavy floods and landslides has wreaked havoc in Nagaland.

With conditions worsening during the past one month, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has finally sought Centre’s help to tackle the situation.

The devastating floods have already claimed 12 lives so far with more than 3000 families displaced in around 400 villages.

In an interim report to the Centre, the state government demanded Rs 219 crore as immediate help seeking assistance to deal with the situation, Chief Minister Rio tweeted, “Nagaland needs your help. Incessant rain has caused floods & landslides in several parts of the state & have affected many.”

Road communication in the state has also been cut off in many places with the Dimapur-Kohima highway still remaining cut off. The calamity has also led to crisis of food and other essentials in many districts.

Kiphire district on the border with Myanmar is the worst affected. However, the state government has sent in relief materials to the affected districts.

Earlier, Deputy commissioner of Kohima Rajesh Soundararajan, speaking to Northeast Live said that the state government is leaving no stone unturned to help the affected people.

Meanwhile, the State Disaster Management Authority has said that the situation is still not good in several parts of the state.

The NSDMA said that even though major roads have been cleared continual rains threaten to disrupt communication once again. The Indian Air Force continues to airdrop essentials in critical areas.
