#GuwahatiAccident: Little Flower School student crushed to death in road mishap. Are unfinished civic work to blame?

First Published: 8th June, 2023 17:01 IST

CCTV footage shows Priya's elder sister who was driving the 2-wheeler, lost control while trying to negotiate a pit dug up by Gammon India Ltd

It was early Thursday morning when Priya Kumari was on her way to the Little Flower School at Hatigaon in Guwahati with her elder sister. But destiny had other plans for this bright student who had enrolled into Class 11 of the Little Flower School only about a month ago from Holy Child School also in Guwahati.

Priya, who was barely metres away from the school came under the wheels of a bus of another educational institute, the Royal Global School. And what followed is nothing but tragic, she lost her life as the wheels of the bus crushed her head leaving her dead on the spot.

But who is to be blamed for the death of this young, innocent child?
At the preliminary stage it seems to looks like a clear case of accident, but onlookers and locals in the Hatigaon area have blamed unfinished road construction work in the area for this fatal mishap.

CCTV footage from the accident site shows Priya’s elder sister who was driving the 2-wheeler lost control while trying to negotiate a deep pit dug up to install water pipes by Gammon India Ltd.

Interestingly, the pit which was left open was filled up with soil within hours of the accident. This perhaps clearly indicates that the agency tasked with installing water pipes for the mega water supply project in the city had exhibited gross negligence by leaving the portion of road uncovered only to become a death trap.

Another question that many are asking, Why the road construction work is not done in a time bound manner and by following proper safety protocol? People on Guwahati streets, be it people in cars or pedestrians, are facing a tough time as half of the already narrow Guwahati roads are under construction making it extremely unsafe for anyone to be on the roads.
