The deceased people were engaged by a contractor for railway work near the Jajpur-Keonjhar Road station
An investigation into the death of the six labourers who were crushed to death by wagons of a stationary goods train in Jajpur railway station in Odisha yesterday evening has begun.
A railway team led by Khordha DRM has started an investigation to find out how the engine-less train rolled down the tracks by itself.
The team members today visited the accident site and inspected the wagons involved in the accident.
As per initial reports, the deceased people were engaged by a contractor for railway work near the Jajpur-Keonjhar Road station. After heavy rains and strong winds hit the region, on Wednesday afternoon, they took shelter beneath the stationary goods train consisting of 33 bogies, parked at the sick line near the station.
Even though the bogies were not connected to an engine compartment, 18 of them became detached and started to move due to strong gusty winds.
This movement resulted in the labourers getting trapped beneath the moving bogies. The 6 labourers were killed on the spot, and one critically injured victim was rushed to a nearby hospital.
“There are hand brakes in the wagons to keep them stationary on the tracks. It seems someone might have unlocked them, leading to the mishap,” said Khordha DRM.
The incident was reported within a week of the tragic triple train accident in Balasore district which killed 288 and injured 1175 people.
