In a good news for the region, the famous Red Cherry Pepper of Sikkim and the Tamenglong Orange of Manipur are among the seven commodities that have been granted Geographical Indications this fiscal year by the Indian patent office.
The two commodities are registered under ‘Agricultural’ product under Geographical Indications of Goods Registration and Protection Act, 1999.
Red Cherry Pepper, locally known as Dallay Khorsani in Sikkim is well known for its unique flavour and high pungency. The pepper is commercially cultivated in the mid hills of West, South and East Districts of Sikkim.
On the other hand the Tamenglong Orange is a unique variant of orange found only in Tamenglong district of Manipur. It is famous especially for its well blended sweetness and acidity taste.
