Gauhati University Tense After Boarders Clash over PG Union Elections, 9 Injured

The altercation, which took place late last night, reportedly stemmed from an argument over the election results.

A major fight broke out at the Gauhati University late last night. Several students sustained injuries because of the violent clash. The fight occurred between boarders of the Madhab Bezbaruah Boys’ Hostel (RCC-1) and the Gopinath Bordoloi Boys’ Hostel (RCC-2), allegedly due to disagreement related to the Gauhati University Post Graduate Students’ Union Elections for the 2024-25 academic year.

The situation quickly escalated into physical violence, resulting in serious injuries to nine students. All injured individuals were rushed to Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) for treatment. Two students were discharged after receiving medical attention, while the others are still under observation.

According to the reports, the injured students have been identified as Sankar Saha (22), Kankan Jyoti Mahanta (26) , Barana Jyoti Das (20) , Rabin Das (24), Mrityunjoy Deka (20) , Miomay Deka (20) , Abhijit Kalita (22), Pallab Patim Hazarika (24) and Manash Gogoi (23).
The situation remains tense on the university campus. Authorities are expected to take steps to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of students.
