From the quiet lanes of Thoubal Khetri Leikai in Northeastern state Manipur to the dazzling sets of Tollywood, 29-year-old Maibam Nabakanta has made a mark as the action director of the blockbuster film Pushpa 2.
Speaking to Northeast Live, Nabakanta shared his inspiring journey, crediting his father’s influence and their shared passion for martial arts for his success. His father’s influence was not limited to the training ground, he was showcasing the Manipuri martial arts on a larger platform. Around twenty-five years ago, Nabakanta’s father performed Thang-Ta at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, a moment that changed their family’s destiny.
“That performance of my father was a turning point. Some filmmakers recognised my father’s skills and started inviting him to work on projects. This opportunity brought us to Hyderabad, where he introduced me to the world of cinema. Since childhood, he has been my mentor and inspiration. From the age of 14 I’ve been working as a stunt man in Hyderabad,” Nabakanta stated.
A Breakthrough with Pushpa 2
For Nabakanta, working on Pushpa 2, directed by Bandreddi Sukumar was a dream come true. The film has taken the Indian box office by storm, setting new benchmarks in regions like Mumbai, CP Berar, CI, Bihar, and Odisha. Bihar, in particular, saw a remarkable Rs. 3 crore nett collection, surpassing the previous record held by KGF 2 by 35-40%. Even the East Punjab circuit, which was initially expected to underperform, surprised everyone with Rs. 5.5 crore nett.

Nabakanta’s role in the film was critical, as he choreographed several high-octane action sequences that captivated audiences. He designed Jatra fight and per climax fight scene Rappa Rappa action fight . “This is my first time working alone as an action director, and I am grateful for the opportunity. The response to Pushpa 2 has been overwhelming,” he said.
“My father has always been my guide. He taught me not just the technicalities of martial arts but also the discipline and creativity needed to thrive in this industry. It’s only been two years since I started working independently, and I owe everything to him,” he said with pride.

Nabakanta is determined to use his platform to shine a spotlight on Manipuri talent. “Manipuri athletes have gained recognition worldwide, and I want to show that our martial arts and skills in the field of film industry are equally deserving of global attention. Thang-Ta is a treasure of our culture, and through cinema, I want to bring it to the world’s stage,” he stated.
Currently, Nabakanta is also working on two major projects with renowned actor directors Ram Charan and Prabhas. He is working for Ramcharan’s RC 16 MOVIE , RRR HERO and for the Prabhas’s Fauji.
However, his ambitions extend beyond personal success. He dreams of creating opportunities for young talent from Manipur to join the film industry.
“There is so much potential in our state. I want to share my experience with skilled youths from Manipur, helping them build stable careers in cinema. This field offers not only recognition but also financial stability, which can transform lives,” Nabakanta added.
Recalling the challenges faced by his family, Nabakanta said, “We came to Hyderabad with lots of struggle. The journey has not been easy, but the support of my father and the opportunities given by this industry have made it worthwhile.”

Nabakanta’s story is one of resilience and ambition, blending Manipur’s rich cultural heritage with the dazzling world of Tollywood. As he continues to climb new heights, his work promises to inspire a generation of aspiring action directors and martial artists.
Pushpa 2 may be the highlight of his career so far, but for Maibam Nabakanta, the journey is just beginning. With his focus on empowering youth and celebrating Manipuri martial arts, he is not only a rising star in Tollywood but also a proud ambassador of his cultural roots.
