So far, Rs 29,04,142 has been confirmed as misappropriated, but officials suspect further financial irregularities.

In a significant financial fraud case, five individuals, including four Tripura police department staff, have been arrested for embezzling over Rs 29 lakh from district police funds. The arrests were confirmed by a senior police official.

Dulal Chandra Datta, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Bishalgarh and the investigating officer, stated that the four arrested police personnel had been suspended and are currently in police remand. The fifth accused, Phanilal Debbarma, a local resident of Bishramganj, was also involved in the fraud.

The case was initially registered in February 2024 against two Sepahijala district police personnel, a UD clerk and an LD clerk.

However, after Datta took over the investigation in July, additional evidence implicated another LD clerk, a police constable, and Debbarma. Investigators discovered that the embezzled funds had been transferred into their bank accounts, leading to their arrests.

The accused were presented in court a day ago, where a three-day police remand was granted. According to Datta, the group had been diverting funds since 2018, misappropriating money from TA bills, salaries, and festival advances meant for police personnel. Since the funds were already spent, recovery remains challenging.

So far, Rs 29,04,142 has been confirmed as misappropriated, but officials suspect further financial irregularities. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the embezzlement.
