Former Meghalaya Trinamool Congress Vice President and Umroi MLA George B Lyngdoh will contest the upcoming Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) elections as an independent.

The decision was taken unanimously during a public meeting held at Umroi Umdohbyrthih.

The meeting was convened by the Umroi Democratic Front (UDF), a newly formed party led by George B. Lyngdoh and Arbinus Lyngdoh, with the participation of hundreds of supporters.

Previously, George B. Lyngdoh had mentioned his candidature under the Umroi Constituency Progressive Forum (UCPF) to support MD Syiem, who contested under the UCPF banner.

However, MD Syiem later joined the Congress party and secured its ticket, sidelining Arbinus Lyngdoh in the process.

This turn of events, marked by MD Syiem’s defection and the denial of a Congress ticket to Arbinus Lyngdoh, led to the unification of both factions.

In a show of solidarity, they resolved to support George B. Lyngdoh as an independent candidate for the 2025 MDC elections. The decision received overwhelming backing from the public, with hundreds pledging their full support during the meeting.

In 2023, Lyngdoh resigned as Vice President of Trinamool Congress, Meghalaya State Unit, and also as President of Trinamool Congress, Umroi Block.

Lyngdoh was one of the 12 Congress Party legislators who defected to the TMC in 2021 under the leadership of former Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma. Lyngdoh, however, lost his Umroi seat to the NPP’s political newcomer, Damanbait Lamare.
