Former power Minister MN Sherpa sworn in as Speaker, Raj Kumari Thapa as Dy Speaker of Sikkim Legislative Assembly

Former power Minister of Sikkim, Mingma Norbu Sherpa sworn in as Speaker, while SKM MLA Raj Kumari Thapa took oath as Deputy Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly today.

Besides them, other newly elected MLAs also sworn in.

They were administered the oath of office by pro-term speaker Sanjeet Kharel in the Assembly in the presence of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang.

MN Sherpa, who is also the founder member of the ruling Sikkim Krantikaei Morcha (SKM), is a 2-time MLA from the Daramdin constituency. Sherpa was the Power and Energy Department Minister in Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang’s Cabinet between 2019 and 2024.

He retained his Daramdin seat defeating SDF’s Pem Norbu Sherpa securing 9404 votes.

In the 2019 Assembly elections, MN Sherpa won the seat with 6,219 votes.

Raj Kumari Thapa, SKM MLA of the Yangang constituency will become the first female Deputy Speaker from Sikkim. She is a former SDF MLA.

This year, she contested from the Yangang seat on the SKM ticket and won the seat securing 6514 votes with a margin of 1201.

After SKM stormed back to power in the state winning 31 out of the 32 Assembly seats in the Sikkim Assembly Election on June 2, 2024, Prem Singh Tamang was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Sikkim for the second consecutive term yesterday.

Along with CM Prem Singh Tamang, 11 MLAs were sworn in. They will be ministers in his new cabinet.
