Congress leader and former chief minister Tarun Gogoi has stirred a controversy by expressing doubts that the NRC which is being updated may not be a correct one as names of genuine Indian citizens could be left out of it.

Participating in the Northeast Tonight show hosted by Northeast Live Editor-in-Chief  Wasbir Hussain ‎on Monday, Gogoi said the fact that the authorities are asking for additional security forces means they are apprehending trouble which itself has led to doubts about the fairness of the exercise.

The former chief minister said there can be trouble only if names of genuine Indian citizens are left out. Gogoi also made a significant comment when replying to a question. He said, “Those people whose names do not appear in the final NRC even after claims and objections are filed must be declared as stateless and steps initiated to deport them and things must be done in accordance with the Assam Accord”.

Gogoi said the Centre must take up the matter with Bangladesh to work out an arrangement. But he also predicted there would be many who would move the Supreme Court if their names do not figure in the final NRC.
