Prevention works are being carried out by the water resources department.

With the onset of Monsoons in the region, the perennial problem of floods and erosion in Assam has reared its ugly head once again.

Officials of the Dibrugarh district administration accompanied by Dibrugarh MLA Prashanta Phukan visited the Marwaripatti locality early this morning to take stock of the severe erosion problem prevailing there.

Prevention works are being carried out by the water resources department.

As per the local people, the erosion was observed on the new stretch along the river bank of the town since last fortnight.

MLA Prashanta Phukan rushed to the area to assess the situation and directed the officials to mobilise men and machineries to prevent the Brahmaputra River from gobbling up land. The stretch hit by the fresh round of erosion is being fortified by geo-bags as immediate measures.

Speaking to newspersons, the Dibrugarh MLA said,” On the river side of the embankment many people have settled permanently. On humanitarian grounds it would be inappropriate to say anything. But now when we are bringing sand, for packing it in form Geo bags, there is no availability of space . Almost every inch of land has been occupied.”

“So we are clearing all the residential facilities on the riverside of the embankment to facilitate for bringing the materials. We have decided patiently to take all these steps. We have already informed the Chief Minister about the developments and the water resource minister is well versed with the character of Dibrugarh. (Pointing to a spot) earlier we celebrated Namami Brahmaputra there, but now things have changed (flooded),” the Dibrugarh MLA further said.

As per the MLA, the water level of the Brahmaputra was recorded at 104.96 meter this morning which was steady for 3 hours. Though Prashanta Phukan said that the administration will be ready with the protection of the embankment by this evening it remains to be seen if the people will be safe this time.
