Nearly 1000 individuals have been evacuated to safer location during rescue operations that began since Wednesday and continued until 6 am this morning

It was a horrific Thursday morning for the people of Imphal Valley who are still nursing their wounds and trying to emerge from the violence that broke out in May last year. Rain water inundated hospitals, the iconic Ima Market, Polo Ground as well as the Governor’s House as Manipur continues to bear the brunt even after four days of Cyclone Remal making on May 26 along the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal.

Rain water entered the Governor’s House located at Imphal West.

Knee-deep water inside the Raj Bhavan (Governor’s House) sent officials and security personnel into a tizzy as it is very rare for a building like the Governor’s House to get flooded.

Meanwhile, Sadar Hills in Kangpokpi District of Manipur has been completely disconnected as Cyclone Remal created havoc in the district, disrupting power supply, water, communication, and other services.

Kangpokpi District Headquarters experienced harrowing plights on Tuesday as Cyclone Remal swept through the town, causing flash floods due to the incessant rainfall, inundating vast parts of the town, mainly the lower portions.

One block of the District Hospital was inundated by the flash flood, compelling the hospital authorities to cease services for the day.

The flash floods in the District Headquarters inundated hundreds of residential houses in several wards.

Most of the schools in the district declared a holiday on Tuesday owing to Cyclone Remal, while some educational institutions opened, despite the risks.

The incessant rainfall also swelled the Gundung River and various other rivulets, causing heavy destruction to the important bridge over the Gundung River connecting Kangpokpi District Headquarters and Saikul Sub-Divisional Headquarters via Keithelmanbi. The bridge served as the second lifeline for the people residing in the Saikul region.
