Nearly 1000 individuals have been evacuated to safer location during rescue operations that began since Wednesday and continued until 6 am this morning
It was a horrific Thursday morning for the people of Imphal Valley who are still nursing their wounds and trying to emerge from the violence that broke out in May last year. Rain water inundated hospitals, the iconic Ima Market, Polo Ground as well as the Governor’s House as Manipur continues to bear the brunt even after four days of Cyclone Remal making on May 26 along the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal.
Rain water entered the Governor’s House located at Imphal West.
Knee-deep water inside the Raj Bhavan (Governor’s House) sent officials and security personnel into a tizzy as it is very rare for a building like the Governor’s House to get flooded.
Patients at the Raj Medicity Hospital located at North AOC of Imphal West were rescued by locals with some police personnel after rain water entered the hospital premises early this morning.
All the ailing patients were shifted to other healthcare facilities.
Rain water also inundated the Khuman Lampak Main Stadium in Imphal, Office of the Directorate of University and Higher Education, and Manipur Press Club Building.
Incessant rain over the past four days resulted in the Imphal and Tambul rivers overflowing and water submerging several parts of Imphal valley.
The Indian Army has been called in and jointly with Assam Rifles, and Manipur Police, the forces rescued close to 1000 people including 131 children in the Valley.
Some of the most affected areas are Nagaram, Khuman Lampak and Lairikyengbam Leikak in Imphal East.
With the capital Imphal West almost under water, some of the worst affected areas are the Khwairamband Ima Market, Mahatma Gandhi Avenue, and areas in and around the Raj Medicity Hospital.
NDRF personnel reached Imphal last night and has already swung into action.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh who is closely monitoring the situation took to X and said, “I appreciate the teams of the NDRF, Indian Army & Assam Rifles for supporting the local authorities in carrying out the rescue operations & saving precious lives at various flood areas of the state.
As many as 40 personnel of the NDRF and 6 additional motorboats have also arrived in Imphal. I urge all to extend cooperation to the rescue teams as they perform their duties to ensure everyone’s safety.”

Meanwhile, Sadar Hills in Kangpokpi District of Manipur has been completely disconnected as Cyclone Remal created havoc in the district, disrupting power supply, water, communication, and other services.
Kangpokpi District Headquarters experienced harrowing plights on Tuesday as Cyclone Remal swept through the town, causing flash floods due to the incessant rainfall, inundating vast parts of the town, mainly the lower portions.
One block of the District Hospital was inundated by the flash flood, compelling the hospital authorities to cease services for the day.
The flash floods in the District Headquarters inundated hundreds of residential houses in several wards.
Most of the schools in the district declared a holiday on Tuesday owing to Cyclone Remal, while some educational institutions opened, despite the risks.
The incessant rainfall also swelled the Gundung River and various other rivulets, causing heavy destruction to the important bridge over the Gundung River connecting Kangpokpi District Headquarters and Saikul Sub-Divisional Headquarters via Keithelmanbi. The bridge served as the second lifeline for the people residing in the Saikul region.
