Flash floods hit South Sikkim: 2 killed, 1 missing, houses washed away

India Meteorological Department has issued yellow alert in Mangan, Gayalsing, Gangtok and Pakyong districts

Two people died and one person is missing after heavy rains lashed South Sikkim on Monday, triggering landslides and flash floods washing away houses and roads.

The deceased have been identified as Yabha Subba and Bishal Rai, while the missing person has been identified as Manita Limbu.

As per inputs, as many as 8 houses have been washed away in flash floods at Majuwa village in Yangan under South Sikkim.

Bad weather has also affected communication. Roads have been closed in the Southern part of the state as a precautionary measure and flight services from the lone Pakyong airport have been affected.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow alert in Mangan, Gayalsing, Gangtok and Pakyong districts.

Press secretary to Sikkim CM, Bikash Basnet condoled the loss of lives and said, “Sad news coming from my village Yangang that rain havoc has taken away two lives, one grievously injured, and one missing in Majuwa village. Also, eight houses have been washed away. Flash flood that erupted from Sikkim University periphery affected downstream villages.”

“Majuwa and Rangang villages have been severely affected. The main road connecting to Yangang has also been washed away at Sisney, Namphok. The authorities are trying to reach out to affected areas for relief and in the meanwhile locals are actively participating in rescue operations. My heart goes out to bereaved families and affected people,” he said.
