Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut known for her amazing performances in films and provocative remarks in real life has put herself in heated air once again for her latest comments.
On social media, Ranaut’s video went viral on Wednesday (November 10), with many people harshly criticising what she said. In the video, she said that what India received in 1947 was “alms”, that was not freedom, but ‘bheekh’ (alms), and the freedom came in 2014. “she continued.
National executive chairman of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Preethi Menon, filed a complaint with the Mumbai Police Department requesting a FIR against Kangana Ranaut for delivering subversive remarks during a conference where she was a guest speaker.
The Congress party also said her remarks amounted to “treason” and demanded that the government take back the Padma Shri bestowed on her recently for “insulting” the country’s independence movement.
Bharatiya Janata Party MP Varun Gandhi also reacted with outrage for Ranaut’s comments. Taking to Twitter, Varun Gandhi said, “Insulting the sacrifice of Mahatma Gandhi sometimes, respecting his killer sometimes, and now the disdain for the sacrifices of Mangal Pandey, Rani Laxmibai, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and lakhs of freedom fighters. Should I call this thinking madness or treason?”
Sharing Varun Gandhi’s tweet on her Instagram stories, Kangana wrote, “Even though I clearly mentioned that 1857 freedom fight was the first revolution that was curbed… which led to more atrocities and cruelties from the British and almost a century was given to us in Gandhi’s begging bowl… Jaa aur ro ab.”
Opposition Congress Leader Anand Sharma termed the remarks “shocking and outrageous” and urged President Ram Nath Kovind to take back the Padma award given to Ranaut.
“Kangana Ranaut’s statement heaping insult on the courageous freedom fighters led by Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru and Sardar Patel but also belittling the sacrifices of revolutionaries like Sardar Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekar Azad and several others,” Anand Sharma said in a series of tweets.
“Psychiatric evaluation should be carried out before giving such awards so that such persons do not dishonour the nation and its heroes,” he said.
