Aleksandar Kolarov produced a moment of captain’s inspiration, curling home a superb free kick as Serbia got their World Cup Group E campaign up and running with a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica.
Serbia had been dominating against the Costa Rican side for most of the game, but chances were thin on the ground until Kolarov made the breakthrough in the 56th minute.
The victory delivered a potentially vital three points for Serbia.
Defending champions Germany crashed to defeat in their first game at the World Cup on Sunday as an enterprising Mexico refused to be intimidated by history and ran out 1-0 winners in a thrilling Group F opener.
After wasting a handful of first-half chances while living dangerously in their own half, Mexico finally got the chance when Hirving Lozano’s 35th minute strike on the break proved rewarding.
Germany pressed in the second half but struggled to find the target as the Mexicans carried on with a tough defence. Germany’s shock defeat puts them in the second slot in the group.
Five time world champions and major tournament favourites Brazil had a shakey start to their World Cup campaign as their first match saw them draw 1-1 with Switzerland. Lax defending from a corner allowed the Swiss to cancel out Philippe Coutinho’s spectacular curling strike and hold the match to a draw.
