Fatal Jalukbari accident survivor narrates what happened that night

Muzzamil who suffered serious injuries in his hands and legs, is still in the hospital undergoing treatment

Four days after the horrific road accident that killed 7 budding engineers and seriously injured 6 people in Jalukbari near Guwahati in Assam, Muzammil Ali one of the survivors, today narrated how the accident took place.

Muzammil, now lying in a hospital bed in Guwahati with broken hand and leg, trembles with fear remembering what had happened that fateful night.

“I along with the Rajiv Ali (driver of the pick-up van) and helper Yusof Ali were coming from Amingaon. We stopped in Jalukbari to have food. Suddenly from nowhere, s speeding Scorpio came landed on top of our van. The Scorpio must have been driving at a speed of 170-180 kms,” Muzammil narrated from his hospital bed.

In the accident that took place on May 28 past midnight, 7 third semester Assam Engineering College students died on the spot and 6 others including Muzammil, Rajiv and Yusof were seriously injured when the SUV that the engineering students were driving toppled and landed on top of the pick-up van that was parked by the roadside. Muzammil, Rajiv and Yusof were sitting inside the van after having food.

The SUV was mangled beyond recognition. The deceased were identified as Rajkiran Bhuyan from Kamalabari in Majuli, Emon Bhuyan from Dibrugarh, Kaushik Mohan from Sibsagar, Upanshu Sharma from Nagaon, Kaushik Barua from Jyotinagar in Mangaldai, Arindam Bhowal, and Niyor Deka, both from Guwahati.

Yesterday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered a high-level inquiry into the cause and circumstance leading to the accident and asked Principal of AEC, Dr Atul Bora and the Superintendent of Hostel No 7 to proceed on compulsory leave till the investigation is completed and the report is evaluated by the government.
