Faizan death case: IIT student’s body exhumed after 7 months for 2nd post-mortem

A team of forensic experts today exhumed the body of IIT-Kharagpur student Faizan Ahmed for a second post-mortem. The mortal remains of Faizan was exhumed from the Amolapatty Kabarshthan (graveyard) in Dibrugarh after 7 months since he was laid to rest on October 16 last year.

The body was exhumed by forensic experts from Guwahati and Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh in the presence of Assam Police officials and officials of Kharagpur Police (West Bengal).

Faizan’s parents were also present during the exhumation.

Following the court order that all parties should be present, Tamal Nath, Officiating Registrar of IIT-Kharagpur was also present at the exhumation. But he stepped aside after Faizan’s parents objected.

Speaking to media, Nath said, “We have full sympathy. They are our child. We came according to the court order but they (Faizan’s parents) have objected, so we are going out. We want that the truth should come out.”

West Bengal CID team is investigating Faizan’s death. The exhumed body would be taken to Kolkata for the 2nd post-mortem.

23-year-old Faizan’s semi-decomposed body was found in his hostel room in IIT Kharagpur on October 14 last year. While the IIT authorities deemed his death a suicide, Faizan’s family claimed it was murder. Faizan who hailed from Tinsukia in Eastern Assam, was a 3rd year student of Mechanical Engineering in IIT Kharagpur.

After six months of his death and Faizan laid to rest, the Calcutta High Court on April 25 had directed the police to exhume the body and conduct post-mortem again.

The court had given the police a month’s deadline to complete the process.

Earlier, on February 20, Justice Rajasekhar Mantha had ordered a forensic probe into the death of Faizan to be conducted by an expert in forensic medicine after police said that the student had committed suicide.

The forensic expert told the court on March 29 that he was not satisfied with the post-mortem report submitted by police and pleaded for a fresh post-mortem.
