Raja Raghuvanshi Murder Case: Sonam, Raj, 3 Others to Be Produced in Court in Shillong Today
One of the prime suspects in the brutal murder of Indore tourist Raja Raghuvanshi, his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, will be produced before a local court on Wednesday. East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said that Sonam, who surrendered in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, has been brought to Shillong on a three-day transit remand.
The four other accused, Raj Kushwaha (allegedly in a relationship with Sonam), Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi, are also on transit remand and are expected to arrive in Shillong by Wednesday afternoon.
Police said the accused will be produced in court and then taken into custody for further interrogation. Following this, they will be taken to Sohra for a reconstruction of the crime.
Talking about how Sonam escaped from Shillong, SP Syiem said that she took a taxi from Mawkdok and then hired a tourist taxi to Guwahati, from where she boarded multiple trains. She claims to have travelled directly to Indore, although this has not been confirmed yet.
The other accused also travelled to Guwahati in a tourist taxi and boarded a train to Indore without halting in the city, according to SP Syiem.
All five accused will first undergo questioning in Shillong. The police will then decide on the timing of the crime scene reconstruction at Wei Sawdong. SP Syiem confirmed that Sonam was present when the crime was committed. Raja was killed in front of her.
Police also revealed that Sonam and Raja had met at a homestay in Nongriat before heading to Wei Sawdong, where the murder took place. Meanwhile, Sonam remained in communication with Raj Kushwaha on the day of the incident, while Raj was in contact with the three alleged contract killers.
Although Sonam has claimed she had never been to Shillong before, the police are currently verifying the statement. Investigators are also working to determine how much money was paid to the contract killers.
Despite limited CCTV coverage, footage showing the accused together has become a key piece of evidence. A special investigation team of 15–20 officers from Meghalaya Police has been deployed, working across different areas and collecting vital data to crack the case.
SP Vivek Syiem affirmed that the SIT is committed to filing a watertight chargesheet soon. He further credited the Meghalaya government, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Home Minister Prestone Tynsong, DGP Idashisha Nongrang, Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang, and the Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh Police for their crucial support in the investigation.
