Ex-CM Biren, MP Sanajaoba Leave for Delhi; Appeals for Calm Amid Escalating Manipur Protests

His appeal comes amid massive protests across Manipur’s valley districts following the arrest of members of Arambai Tenggol.
Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba left Imphal for New Delhi on Monday to meet higher authorities and seek an early resolution to the ongoing unrest in the state.
Speaking to reporters before departure, Biren Singh said, “I, along with Rajya Sabha MP Maharaja Sanajaoba, am going to meet the higher authorities to apprise them of the situation in Manipur and to seek a timely solution. We are at a very crucial stage and must act with utmost care and responsibility. I appeal to everyone to refrain from violence or being driven by emotion. Let us stay united and work together for the betterment of the indigenous people.”
His appeal comes amid massive protests across Manipur’s valley districts following the arrest of members of Arambai Tenggol, including key leader Kanan Singh, on Saturday night. A joint team of Manipur Police and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) carried out the arrests.
In response, protestors have called a 10-day statewide shutdown, exempting only emergency services like medical and media. The bandh has severely disrupted transport, businesses, and daily life in the valley.
On Sunday, security forces transported Kanan Singh from Imphal to Guwahati. The CBI confirmed his arrest at Imphal Airport, citing his alleged role in several crimes related to the 2023 Manipur violence.
Tensions remain high since Saturday night. District Magistrates have imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to maintain law and order. Authorities have also suspended mobile internet services in five valley districts till June 12 to prevent further escalation.
