Despite the growing clamor in Mizoram calling for the removal of CEO SB Shashank, the Election Commission of India justified its decision to replace former Mizoram Principal Secretary (Home) L Chuaungo.

In a letter to the current Principal secretary to the CM of Mizoram the Election commission stated that after considering all aspects of conduct of free and fair elections and the sequence of events in the last two months, the commission took a considered decision to replace Chuaungo.

The EC letter also stated that the letter by the then principal secretary Chuaungo seeking clarification from the Chief Electoral Officer o the quantum of Central Armed Police Force deployment and why the Home department was not consulted before deciding the requirement in the state for current elections tantamount to blatant interference in the working of the CEO which by implication is an interference in the process of elections.

The election commission further urged the state government to take all possible measures to ensure free and fair elections.
