ECI shares draft delimitation proposal for Assam

The Election Commission of India has published the draft for the delimitation proposal. The delimitation draft proposal has stated that Assam will have 14 Lok Sabha constituencies for the Lok Sabha elections due next year.
Among the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state, ECI has further clarified that one seat will be reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates, and two seats will be reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidates. Apart from this, the names of three Lok Sabha seats are to be renamed. Mangaldoi seat will become Darrang, Tezpur seat will now be known as Sonitpur, and now Kaliabor seat will be renamed as Kaziranga.
ECI has stated that the state will continue to have 126 state assembly constituencies. Of these, 19 seats will be reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidates and nine seats will be allotted to Scheduled Caste candidates. Here, one constituency has increased in the West Karbi Anglong district. On ther other hand, districts within the Bodoland Territorial Region has increased from 16 to 19. Apart from this, several assembly constituencies have been renamed.

The ECI has also made it clear that the commission plans to visit Assam again sometime next month where they intend to conduct a public hearing on the draft proposal. Concerned citizens and organisations have been invited to submit their suggestions and objections till July 11 with regards to the delimitation proposal.
The commission had received representations from 11 political parties and 71 organisations when the commission last visited the state in March earlier this year.
