The Election Commission has stalled the release of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s biopic, a day before its release, during the election period.
The film coinciding with the start of the Lok Sabha polls – ‘disturbs the level playing field’, the election body said.
The film directed by Omung Kumar, was scheduled for release on April 11. The commission said that the film won’t release till the Model Code of Conduct is in place.
The commission has ordered that “Any biopic material in the nature of biography/hagiography sub-serving the purposes of any political entity or individual connected to it, which is intended to, or which has the potential to disturb the level playing field during the elections, should not be displayed in the electronic media including cinematograph during the operation of MCC”.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had rejected a plea which sought to postpone the release of the biopic. The apex court also said that it was up to the Election Commission to take a call on whether or not the film violates the Model Code of Conduct.
The biopic, starring Vivek Oberoi, had received a ‘U’ certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Tuesday.
