Sikkim Chief Minister PS Golay on Monday filed his nomination to contest bypolls from the Poklok-Kamrang Assembly constituency in the State.
It was a big relief for Sikkim chief minister PS Golay, after the Election Commission on Sunday reduced his disqualification period to enable the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha chief to contest the upcoming October 21 by-polls in the state.
Golay, who was convicted for an offence committed under the Prevention of Corruption Act, served a jail term from August 2017 to August 2018 following which he was barred from cintesting polls for a period of 6 years.
The development comes a day after the SKM announced a tie-up with the BJP for the upcoming by-polls to three seats in the state. While the BJP is contesting from Gangtok and Martam-Rumtek, PS Golay will now contest from Poklok Kamrang assembly constituency.
Golay was elected the legislature party leader of SKM after the party’s historic win overthrowing 25 years of Pawan Chamling rule.
It may be mentioned that in order to continue as Sikkim Chief Minister, Golay has to become a member of the state assembly before November 19th.
