Meghalaya Health Minister Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh today emphasized the significance of prevention and early detection in combating cancer.
Meghalaya government in collaboration with Apollo Telemedicine Networking Foundation (ATNF) organised Meghalaya Cancer Conclave 2024, themed “Close the Care Gap” in Shillong today.
Speaking at the event, Health Minister Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh emphasized the urgency of action, urging stakeholders to move beyond discussions and implement effective measures.
She highlighted the importance of ensuring accessibility to healthcare through initiatives like the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) and emphasized the significance of prevention and early detection in combating cancer.
The Health Minister said that the health department will conduct a consolidated audit of its services in the state.
The audit will done of the machinaries and equipments, manpower availability including nursing staffs and technicians. Minister Lyngdoh also called for introspection of the department.
She stated that the threat posed by cancer is no longer limited to Shillong, but rather is spreading rapidly and affecting more households in the state of Meghalaya now a days.
The Minister said that, the State government will take a period of a month, talk about cancer and see the challenges of cancer and see what can be done as the state do not believe in one day observation of day against cancer. The department is also holding cancer screening every day.
Addressing the gathering at the event, North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) director Dr Nalin Mehta called Meghalaya the “cancer capital of India”, even as he called for early detection of the Cancer.
The Meghalaya Cancer Conclave 2024 signifies a significant stride towards building a resilient and compassionate ecosystem for cancer care in the region. It underscores the importance of collaboration and shared knowledge in bridging the care gap and providing hope to those affected by cancer.
