Durga Puja gifts for tea workers of Assam:
daily wage hiked, 20% bonus, job reservation announced

The Cabinet decided to give a 20 per cent puja bonus to tea workers of Assam. The Assam government will give the bonus under the Assam Tea Corporation Limited.

Big Durga Puja bonanza for tea workers of Assam. The state government on Monday announced a hike in their daily wages by Rs 18 with effect from October 1, a bonus of 20% and reservation in jobs.

Now the daily wage of the tea workers in Brahmaputra Valley would be Rs 250 a day, up from
Rs 232. In Barak Valley it would be Rs 228 a day, up from Rs 210.

The wage hike decision was taken at a cabinet meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Tthe Cabinet also decided to give a 20 per cent puja bonus to the tea workers. The Assam government will give the bonus under the Assam Tea Corporation Limited, CM Sarma said.

There will be a 3 per cent reservation in government jobs for tea garden workers and adivasi people with immediate effect. This will be for only non-creamy layer, the CM said post the Cabinet meeting.

In some other decisions of the Cabinet, the CM said that Bajali district would be created by bifurcating the existing Barpeta district.

“At present, the district will be formed with the existing Bajali constituency from October 11. Later, the demarcation will be done as per suggestions of the cabinet sub-committee,” he said.

Sharing another decision of the cabinet, Sarma said that for students studying in government schools from class 7 to 12 under Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA), 5 per cent seats will be reserved in MBBS or Bachelor of Dental Surgery.

“Besides, for the Moran and Matak communities, one magistrate and one DSP posts will be reserved in Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) recruitment,” he added.

The cabinet also announced that the girls who score 60% and above marks in the Higher Secondary final exam and boys who score 75% and above marks will get scooties. The scooties will be distributed by the end of this year.

The Cabinet decided that universities like Rabindranath Tagore University and Madhabdev University would be able to give affiliations to colleges.

Sarma said that the Assam Public Examination (Measure for Prevention of Unfair Means in Recruitment Ordinance) was approved by the state cabinet and the details will be shared by Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on Tuesday. The chief minister said a code of conduct was approved for the expenses of cabinet meetings outside Guwahati.

“The ministers while discharging duties attend lots of meetings and functions. In those, they get many types of gifts. In this regard also, an important decision was taken and Pegu will intimate it tomorrow,” he added.

The cabinet also decided to ban drinking water bottles of sizes up to 250 ml from Monday, Sarma said.
