DU Ragging Victim Anand Undergoes Surgery in Dibrugarh Today

Dibrugarh University ragging victim Anand Sharma was operated upon today at Dibrugarh’s Aditya Nursing Home. The surgery was performed by a team of doctors led by renowned neurosurgeon Dr Panna Lal. Doctors attending on Anand had earlier said that an immediate surgery was needed to help Anand walk again.
A large crowd gathered outside the Nursing Home where Anand underwent the surgery praying for a successful surgery and complete recovery of Anand.
The surgery was critical as doctors had earlier said that Anand had suffered injuries to his spine and a surgery was must to ensure that he is able to walk.
Anand, MCom first semester student of the University was brutally tortured from November 26 evening till early morning of November 27 following which he had jumped off the second floor of PNGB hostel to escape the torture.
Assam government is bearing all the medical costs for Anand’s treatment. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu is in constant touch with the doctors attending on Anand and Anand’s family.
So far four students involved in the ragging incident have been arrested by police — Simanta Hazarika, Niranjan Thakur, Pranjit Baruah, and Subhrajit Baruah. Police hunt is on to nab Rahul Chetry, the main accused and ex-student of the University. Additional SP (HQ) Bitul Chetia said that 4 special teams have been formed and sent to various directions to nab Chetry. A total of 15 students have been identified by the police. The University has suspended four students – Dibyajyoti Gogoi, Subhrajit Baruah, Niranjon Thakur and Kalyan Dutta from attending classes till the magisterial and institutional enquiries are over. They have been prohibited from entering the University premises too.
A magisterial enquiry too is underway. The University has constituted a 5-member committee to investigate any lapses or deficiencies in dealing with ragging incidents in the University.
