One more student has been arrested in connection with the Dibrugarh University ragging case in which some senior students of the state-run University including an ex-student brutally tortured a junior student (Anand Sharma) forcing him to jump off the second floor of his hostel to escape his torturers.

The arrested student has been identified as Subhrajeet Baruah.

Subhrajeet Baruah was arrested by the police from Tingkhong area in eastern Assam’s Dibrugarh district.

The police has also detained a Mukti Sangram leader for giving shelter to Subhrajit.

Tthe police has intensified its search for the main accused Rahul Chetry (ex-student) who is absconding. So far four students have been arrested by the police which includes Simanta Hazarika, Niranjan Thakur, Pranjit Baruah, and Subhrajit. A total of 15 students have been identified by the police.

Additional SP (HQ) Bitul Chetia said that four special teams have been formed and sent to various directions to nab Chetry.

Meanwhile, Victim Anand Sharma continues to be in ICU. Earlier speaking exclusively to Northeast Live from his hospital bed, Anand said that he do not want anyone’s career to be ruined.

It may be mentioned that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lambasted the Dibrugarh University authorities for its lax attitude and utter failure in handling the “serious offence” of ragging that took place in PNGBC hostel of the University on November 26 night.

The Chief Minister also gave a strong warning to all students, saying, “Ragging will not be tolerated in any college, University of Assam. There will be zero tolerance for ragging”.

Moreover, a magisterial enquiry into the case is underway and a report is likely to be filed in a couple of days.
