The estimated value of the confiscated contraband stands at a staggering Rs 54.79 crore
In a joint operation, the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department officials successfully intercepted and seized 1,82,660 tablets of Methamphetamine worth a staggering Rs 54.79 crore
at two locations in Mizoram’s Champhai district near the Myanmar border on Wednesday.
According to a press statement issued by the Assam Rifles, the operation conducted by the Serchhip battalion resulted in the recovery of 94,940 tablets, worth approximately Rs 28.482 crore, from Mualkawi village in Champhai district.
87,720 tablets, valued at around Rs 26.316 crore, were seized from Khuangleng village on the same day.
The two-day operation saw the arrest of two individuals involved in the possession and transportation of the illegal drugs. The apprehended suspects were identified as Rostum Ali Lasker (32) from Hailakandi in Assam and Jantu Das (45) from Ramutia in Tripura.
Both the seized contraband and the arrested individuals have been handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department Champhai for further legal proceedings.
This year alone, Assam Rifles personnel have made substantial strides in combating drug trafficking in the region. The statement revealed that narcotics worth an astounding Rs 666 crore have been seized in the first 7 months of 2023.
The seized drugs, known as ‘crystal meth’ or ‘speed pills,’ are believed to have been smuggled from neighboring Myanmar. Mizoram’s 404-km long porous international border with Myanmar has long been a major conduit for clandestine drug trafficking, especially due to the infamous Golden Triangle’s proximity to the region.
The surge in drug trafficking activities in the area has been attributed to the instability in Myanmar following the military coup in February 2021. With the lack of efficient administration in the Chin state bordering Mizoram, drug smugglers have exploited the situation to their advantage.
Authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to combat drug-related activities and have intensified border security measures to curb the inflow of illegal substances.
