Drugs worth over Rs 20 cr seized at Silchar airport, 2 Mizoram-based drug peddlers arrested

Police recovered 4 kg Methamphetamine, a highly addictive psychostimulant drug consumed by addicted persons across the globe

The Assam Police have recovered a large quantity of drugs worth over Rs 20 crore at the Silchar Airport in Cachar district and arrested two Mizoram-based drug peddlers in this connection.

The arrested duo have been identified as– Joseph Lalnunmawia (22), a resident of Aizawl and F Lalhmangaihzuala (30), who hails from Champhai district.

Based on specific inputs about the smuggling of drugs on Thursday, a team of Cachar Police in collaboration with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) launched an operation at the Silchar airport located at Kumbhirgram. During the search operation, the team detained the duo with 4 packets containing 4kg of Methamphetamine, said Additional SP, Cachar, Subrata Sen.

Sen said that the arrested persons travelled from Mizoram capital Aizawl with the consignment and successfully managed to board a Kolkata-bound flight.

The duo were attempting to transport the drugs to a neighbouring state, said Sen.

According to the police, a case has been registered against them under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 and they will be produced before the court today.
