Serving Principal Dr. Atul Bora was asked to proceed on compulsory leave following an order from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma
Dr. Kalyan Kalita, Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering, Assam Engineering College (AEC), has been made the Principal in-charge of the institution with immediate effect. This decision was taken after current Principal Dr. Atul Bora was asked to proceed on compulsory leave following an order from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Yesterday, Chief Minister Sarma had ordered a high-level inquiry into the cause and circumstances leading to the fatal road accident at Jalukbari on May 28 late night that killed 7 third semester engineering students of AEC on the spot and left 3 other students and 3 other people critically injured.
The Chief Minister has also instructed the Education Department to set up a committee to review the current electoral system in colleges and universities.
In a crackdown on the use of alcohol in hostels and educational institutions and over-stay of boarders in hostels leading to incidents of brutal ragging and other fatal incidents, the CM ordered the setting up of another committee that will focus on ensuring discipline, compliance to rules and regulations in educational institutions as well as the hostels. This committee will also monitor proper implementation of the prohibition on alcohol consumption in hostels, and extended stays by former hostel residents. The committee will propose measures to promote a healthy community environment within the hostels.
