The world's cheapest TB testing technology- 'A CRISPR Cas-based TB detection system' has been developed by ICMR-RMRCNE, Dibrugarh

In a breakthrough achievement in the fight against tuberculosis, the ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre, North East (ICMR-RMRCNE) in Dibrugarh, Assam has developed the world’s cheapest TB testing technology- ‘A CRISPR Cas-based TB detection system’, which can detect the TB bacteria using DNA from a patient’s saliva for just Rs 35.
It can identify the bacteria at the earliest symptoms, testing over 1500 samples simultaneously within approximately two hours.

It is so simple that it can be used even in the primary health centre of a village.

The cutting-edge technology is now available for technology transfer through the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Headquarters in New Delhi.

ICMR has invited Expressions of Interest (EoI) from the eligible organizations, companies, and manufacturers to undertake ‘Transfer of Technology’ for the commercialisation of A CRISPR Cas-based TB detection system.

In case of co-development, the parties will have equal rights on the manuscripts/scientific publications, said ICMR.

This low-cost ultra-sensitive molecular detection system for Mycobacterium tuberculosis leverages CRISPR-Cas technology for near Point of Care setups. The system includes a low-cost device called ‘RapidGlow’ and a TB diagnosis kit named ‘GlowTBPCR’, offering rapid and accurate tuberculosis diagnosis to address critical gaps in current.
