Dhing Gang Rape Case: 1 of the prime accused tries to flee from police custody, jumps into pond, dies

Tafazul Islam (24) was one of three accused in the alleged gangrape a Class 10 girl student in Nagaon district’s Dhing area.
One of the prime accused in the horrific Dhing gangrape case died after he jumped into a pond while trying to flee from police custody in the wee hours of Saturday.
The incident happened at Borbheti around 4 am this morning, when the accused, identified as Tafazul Islam was being taken to the spot for reconstruction of the crime scene.
Soon, a search operation was launched, and the body was recovered thereafter.
Two other accused in the case are still absconding.
While speaking to the media, Swapnaneel Deka, Superintendent of Police of Nagaon district, said that when a police team took Tafazul Islam last night to the spot for investigation where the incident took place, the prime accused tried to flee and jumped into a pond with cuffed hands.
“Our police personnel, with the help of the SDRF team, engaged in a search operation and recovered his body from the pond today morning. Our constable, who was holding his handcuffs, has some injuries in his hand and has been sent for treatment,” Nagaon SP added.
Tafazul Islam (24) was one of three accused in the alleged gangrape of a Class 10 girl student in Nagaon district’s Dhing area.
He was the only one of the three arrested so far and was charged under sections of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the POCSO Act.
On Friday, Assam DGP GP Singh visited the site, met the victim’s family members, and also spoke with senior police officials.
The incident had sparked outrage and triggered large protests in Dhing with hundreds of locals, including women and members of local organizations, coming out on the streets demanding punishment for the perpetrators.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had declared that the government would “not spare anyone” involved in the case.
