Deputy CM Sniawbhalang Dhar Asserts NPP’s Continued Dominance Over VPP in Meghalaya

First Published: 25th February, 2025 19:22 IST

He highlighted that NPP, along with the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, has witnessed notable growth, particularly in vote share.

Despite the Voice of the People Party’s (VPP) strong performance in the recent MDC polls in Meghalaya, Deputy Chief Minister and NPP leader Sniawbhalang Dhar has dismissed concerns over its growing influence. He emphasised that the National People’s Party (NPP) continues to strengthen, with a steady increase in vote share over the past months.

Dhar pointed out that while VPP had made a significant impact in the last MP elections across all 29 seats, its presence has now been reduced to 17.

He highlighted that NPP, along with the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, has witnessed notable growth, particularly in vote share.

Speaking to the media, Dhar revealed that NPP is in the final stages of selecting its candidates, with the announcement expected before Christmas or early in the new year. He also stated that even if NPP falls short of numbers, it will collaborate with other parties to form the Executive Committee (EC) in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).

Drawing a distinction between governance levels, Dhar noted that while VPP manages the District Council, NPP remains responsible for running the state government, reinforcing its leadership role in Meghalaya’s political landscape.
