Demand for Mawsynram Subdivision: Protests Intensify as Pressure Mounts on Government

The demand for upgrading Mawsynram C&RD block into a civil subdivision has intensified, with protests led by the KSU and local groups.
The demand to upgrade the Mawsynram Community and Rural Development (C&RD) block into a civil subdivision has gained momentum, with various pressure groups, including the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), staging protests and urging the Meghalaya government to take swift action. This long-standing demand has been pending for 24 years, despite repeated appeals from locals.
Speaking to Northeast Live, local MLA Ollan Singh Suin stated, “This demand has been long overdue. I have personally spoken to the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister about it, and I plan to meet with the Chief Minister soon, along with all stakeholders. I am hopeful that this government will finally fulfill the people’s demand.”
Mawsynram, located 69 kilometers from Shillong and over 100 kilometers from its border areas, faces significant challenges in accessing administrative services. Although the state government created nine new C&RD blocks in 2022, Mawsynram was left out, frustrating residents who believe their region deserves an upgrade after decades of waiting.
