The demand for implementation of the Inner Line Permit in Sikkim has gained new momentum with BJP Legislator, D R Thapa requesting a resolution on ILP before the Central Government issues a fresh notification on the Citizenship Amendment Act.

MLA Thapa during his valedictory address in the Assembly session on Friday reminded the House about Home Minister Amit Shah’s ‘verbal promise’. Thapa stated, that the Home Minister’s assurance so far is only verbal that CAA will not be implemented in Sikkim on the pretext that Sikkim already has Article 371F as protection.

He requested the State government to pass a resolution demanding an Inner Line Permit in Sikkim before the Central Government issues another gazette on the implementation of CAA.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, Thapa raised the need for stricter labor laws as well as the implementation of ILP.

The MLA highlighted the changing demography of Sikkim in the absence of ILP and the lack of a mechanism to check the entry and exit of migrants. He informed the number of migrants in the state is higher than the state’s recorded population.

Thapa also informed that there are no mechanisms to identify who are migrants and who are Sikkimese.
