‘Deltacron’ a news strain of the COVID-19 that combines at least 10 mutations of the Delta and Omicron variants has been identified in Cyprus on Saturday.
The ‘Deltacron’ has Omicron-like genetic signatures within the delta genomes, according to a team of biological sciences experts at the University of Cyprus.
Professor Leondios Kostrikis, head of the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular Virology at the University of Cyprus, informed the media that his team discovered 25 cases of the virus so far.

11 of the 25 cases were reported from hospitalised patients, with the remaining 14 being identified among the general populace.
The new strain’s samples have currently been sent to The Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID), a German-based international database that monitors COVID-19-related developments.
As the news of ‘Deltacron’ hit the headlines, Cyprus’s Minister of Health assured that the new variant was “not something to be worried about at the moment.” He also praised the team’s “groundbreaking research and findings.”
Nevertheless, the scientific name of the variant has not yet been announced, and more information on the variant will be announced at a press conference scheduled for the start of the coming week.
