Barman was arrested around 70-80 kilometers from Goa on Sunday evening after the Guwahati police team laid a trap.
Dipankar Barman, the mastermind behind the multi-crore DB Stocks fraud case, went through rigorous grilling last night, soon after he landed in Guwahati. He is set to be produced in court in Guwahati today after being taken into custody by a special Assam Police team from Goa.
Barman, who had been on the run for over two months, is accused of orchestrating one of Assam’s largest stock market scams, allegedly duping investors of thousands of crores with promises of high returns.
Barman was arrested around 70-80 kilometers from Goa on Sunday evening after the Guwahati police team laid a trap. Following his arrest, a three-day transit remand was secured from a Goa court, allowing the police team to bring him back to Guwahati yesterday. Barman was held at Panbazar police station last night, where he faced intensive questioning by the authorities, who are eager to trace the full extent of his network and financial dealings.
Sources close to the investigation reveal that Dipankar Barman may soon be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a broader probe into the scam’s scope and impact on victims. Additionally, assets linked to Barman and his associates, Bishal Phukan and Sumi Bora, are under scrutiny, with authorities examining if these were acquired through illicit funds. According to sources, the court may eventually decide to liquidate the assets and redistribute the proceeds among the defrauded investors.
Meanwhile, outside Panbazar police station last night, crowds of people who claim to have lost their savings to the scam gathered, hoping for some resolution on recovering their funds. Police have assured them that the investigation will be thorough and that measures will be taken to address the victims’ grievances.
