CWG 2018, Day 9: Wrestler Bajrang Punia, Shooters Anish Bhanwala, Tejaswini Sawant bag Golds

India continues to shine on the ninth day of the 21st Commonwealth Games on Friday. India remained at the 3rd spot with 17 gold, 11 silver and 14 bronze medals.

Ace Shooter Tejaswini Sawant and Anjum Moudgil won gold and silver respectively in the Women’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions event. Tejaswini registered a new game record of 457.9 points to take the title.

15-year-old shooter Anish Bhanwala, created history by becoming the country’s youngest ever gold medal winner in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event. Facing tough competition from 20-year-old Australian shooter Sergei Evglevski and 28-year-old Sam Gowin of England, Anish kept his focus throughout the eight rounds to emerge on top.

Indian boxer Naman Tanwar finished his Commonwealth Games campaign with a bronze. He lost to Jason Whateley of Australia in the 91KG Boxing event.

Wrestler Bajrang Punia entered the final of the men’s 65 kilogram category at the 21st Commonwealth Games. Bajrang Punia added gold to the India tally with a 10-0 margin over Wales’ Charig Kane in the men’s 65kg category.

Wrestler’s continued their excellent day with Divya Kakran adding another medal to India’s kitty after claiming a bronze medal in women’s 68 kg freestyle. Kakran defeated Bangladesh’s Sherin Sultana 4-0.

Indian paddlers Manika Batra and Mouma Das clinched the silver medal in women’s doubles event.

Kidambi Srikanth advanced into the badminton men’s singles semi-finals thrashing Singapore’s Zin Rei Ryan in straight games. Srikanth recently rose to the No.1 spot in the Badminton World Federation rankings.

Meanwhile in the Women’s 57 kg freestyle, Pooja dhanda had to settle for silver after a thrilling finish saw her go down fighting to Nigeria’s Odunayo Adekuoroye.

However, India’s men’s hockey team lost to New Zealand 2-3 in the semi-final. India will now head to the bronze medal playoff against the loser between Australia and England.
