Rahul Gandhi offered to resign as the Congress President following the party’s drubbing in the Lok Sabha elections.
A crucial Congress Working Committee (CWC) meet was held at the national capital to take a call on the Congress President’s decision to step down.
However, the Congress high command rejected Gandhi’s resignation and expressed faith on his leadership and insisted Gandhi continue as the party chief.
In the resolution adopted at today’s CWC, the party said it had accepted the mandate of the people of India will all humility and fully recognises the challenges, failures shortcomings of the party that resulted in this mandate.
This is the second successive debacle for the Congress in Lok Sabha elections and Gandhi had been the prominent face in both the elections.
In 2014, Congress was limited to 44 seats, failing to be an opposition in the parliament. This year as well, the party could not cross the 10% mark to be declared as opposition in the parliament.
