A major crackdown against ULFA (I) has led to the arrest of 14 overground workers (OGWs) and 2 active cadres in Eastern Assam in the last two weeks.
The operation, led by Assam Police in coordination with Assam Rifles and Military Intelligence, has dealt a significant blow to the militant group’s network in the region.
On November 7, two OGWs Rinku Nath from Sivasagar and Tulsi Gogoi from Charaideo were arrested for their involvement in recruiting for ULFA (I) and financing their activities. Both were reportedly believed to have been linked with high-ranking ULFA (I) officers, SS Brigadier Ganesh Lahon and SS Major General Nayan Medi.
A subsequent joint operation on November 9 in Tinsukia and Majuli districts led to the arrest of 2 active cadres of the ULFA-I- Bhaiti Pagag and Kulang Moran, both of whom had been in contact with senior ULFA (I) leaders, including SS Lieutenant General Michel Dekha Pukhan, Deputy Commander-in-Chief at the General Military Headquarters (GMHQ) of ULFA (I).
The operation, which began in late October and has intensified over the past week, aims to dismantle ULFA (I)’s infrastructure and prevent potential attacks in in coming days, such as ULFA (I) Protest Day on November 28, 2024, and Republic Day on January 26, 2025.
