The bypoll in Dhanpur was necessitated after Bhoumik resigned from the Assembly days after her election.

The CPI(M)-led Left Front on Sunday announced its candidates for the bypolls, which will be held in Dhanpur and Boxanagar assembly constituencies in Tripura’s Sepahijala district on September 5.

In Dhanpur constituency, Kaushik Chanda will be the Left Front’s candidate, while Mizan Hussain will contest from Boxanagar, Left Front chairman and former MP Narayan Kar said.

”The two candidates will submit their nomination papers on August 15,” Kar stated.

Kar said that in the last Assembly elections, Chanda had lost to Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik from Dhanpur, but the CPI(M) managed to retain the Boxanagar seat defeating the BJP candidate in a triangular contest.

Mizan is the son of Boxanagar CPI(M) MLA Samsol Haque who passed away in July causing a vacancy, Kar added.

“In this election, we are thinking about how to safe our democracy in the state. The police administration is a mute spectator. So, in this situation, we ask that all democratic and secular parties come together so that we can defeat the BJP in this coming bye poll’, Kar said.

The bypoll in Dhanpur was necessitated after Bhoumik resigned from the Assembly days after her election.

A total of 93,234 eligible voters are expected to participate in the by-election, with 43,087 voters in the Boxanagar constituency and 50,147 voters in the Dhanpur assembly segment. This includes 20,921 female voters in Boxanagar and 24,203 female voters in Dhanpur.

The by-elections will be conducted across 51 polling stations in the Boxanagar assembly constituency and 59 polling stations in Dhanpur.

On Saturday, leaders of the opposition Tipra Motha, CPI(M) and Congress met to strategise for the by-election to the two assembly seats in Tripura, in which they are looking to avoid a split of the anti-BJP votes.
